How to Maintain Your Broadband Router: Six Tips to Ensure Your Internet Speeds Stay Tip Top

By 4th Utility on November 13, 2023 Industry News, News, TV and Telecoms

In today’s digitally connected world, a reliable, high-speed internet connection is essential for work and leisure.

Full fibre broadband has become increasingly popular for its lightning-fast speeds and consistent performance. However, like any piece of technology, the router required to enable full fibre needs regular maintenance to ensure it operates at its best.

In this article, full fibre broadband provider 4th Utility explains why routine maintenance is crucial for the performance of broadband speeds, and how by following six simple steps, you can keep your connection tip top.

Keep your router in a cool, ventilated space

Routers generate heat while they’re running, but overheating can affect their performance and lifespan. Maintain your router by ensuring it’s placed in a cool, well-ventilated area, especially in the summer months.

Elevate it off the floor and try to avoid stacking it with other devices or tucking it away in a closed cupboard. Ideally, place it in an open space, away from sunlight where air can circulate freely, and heat can dissipate.

To maximise broadband coverage, your router should be in a central location within your home, away from obstructions like large appliances .

Check with your broadband provider about what options are available for router placement for optimal positioning.

    Regularly update firmware

Firmware updates are released frequently by your broadband provider to address security weaknesses, enhance performance, and fix bugs.

    Secure your network

Security is paramount when maintaining your full fibre router and securing your network.

It’s a good idea to change default usernames and passwords to prevent unauthorised access to your router. Ensure that you have a strong and unique password for your broadband network and consider changing it regularly.

Additionally, you may want to enable WPA3 encryption to safeguard your data and prevent unauthorised users from connecting.

Regularly clean and dust your router

Over time, dust may build up on the router’s external vents, affecting its cooling system and potentially causing overheating.

To prevent this, regularly and carefully clean your router using a can of compressed air or a soft brush. You can buy compressed air at most supermarkets or DIY shops.

Make sure to unplug the router before cleaning and handle it gently to avoid damage.

    Properly manage connected devices

Full fibre routers can handle a lot of connected devices, but an excessive number may slow your network down.

Manage your connected devices and remove those that are no longer in use or connected unnecessarily.

This will help maintain the performance of the router and ensure all devices on your network get the bandwidth they need.

If your router has an external antenna make sure they are appropriately spaced out, not touching, or overlapping.

    Restart your router periodically

Sometimes, a simple router reboot can resolve connectivity issues you may experience.

Restarting your router can clear its cache, refresh the connection, and improve its performance.

It’s good practice to reboot your router every couple of months or whenever you notice your internet speed significantly slowing down.

To sum up, maintaining your full fibre router means you’ll be able to enjoy a fast and reliable internet connection. By following these six tips, you can extend the life of your router and ensure it continues to deliver ultrafast speeds. Remember that, like any technology, your router may need occasional troubleshooting or professional help. Stay proactive and attentive to your router’s needs to keep your internet connection running smoothly for years to come.
