Electric Charge Points in Residential Car Parks – Risks to Consider

As a more commonly used facility within residential and public car parks, it is sometimes asked ‘what are the risks of charging points for electric cars’ particularly in underground car parks of residential blocks of flats?

Electric cars are becoming increasingly popular as people look for environmentally friendly alternatives to petrol and diesel vehicles. With this rise in popularity comes the need for more electric car charging points in public car parks or private car parks in residential buildings. While electric car charge points provide a convenient way to charge your vehicle, there are also risks associated with them.

One of the main risks of electric car charge points in car parks is the potential for damage to the charging equipment. This can be caused by accidents such as cars hitting the charging points or cables being pulled out accidentally. Damage to the charging equipment can result in the charging point being out of action, leaving other electric car users unable to charge their vehicles.

Another risk associated with electric car charge points in car parks is the potential for theft. Electric car charging cables and plugs can be expensive and valuable items, making them an attractive target for thieves. Car park operators need to ensure that the charging points are secure and monitored to prevent theft.

There is also the risk of electric shock when using electric car charging points. Electric car charging cables and plugs carry high voltage electricity, and if they are damaged or misused, they can pose a risk of electric shock to users. Car park operators need to ensure that the charging points are regularly inspected and maintained to reduce the risk of electric shock.

Furthermore, there is also the risk of fire when using electric car charging points. Lithium-ion batteries in electric cars can be volatile and can catch fire if damaged or overheated. In the event of a fire, the charging point can become a source of fuel for the flames, increasing the risk of damage and injury. Car park operators need to ensure that the charging points are installed in a safe location and that they have appropriate fire suppression systems in place.

To mitigate these risks, car park operators need to ensure that they have appropriate risk management and safety measures in place. This includes regular inspection and maintenance of the charging points, ensuring that they are installed in a safe location, and implementing appropriate security measures to prevent theft.

In conclusion, electric car charge points in car parks provide a convenient way to charge electric vehicles. However, there are also risks associated with their use, including damage to the charging equipment, theft, electric shock, and fire. Car park operators need to ensure that they have appropriate safety measures in place to reduce these risks and provide a safe and secure environment for electric car users which can be effectively managed by assessing the risks and implementing an action plan for the safety of the property, its occupants and any other persons on site.
