Collaboration – The Block Managers Boardroom

By Flat Living on October 1, 2019 Opinion

What is Collaboration? Is it a buzz word? Is it is real?

I feel like we all want to collaborate, and know it will benefit us, but don’t know where to start, how to meet people, and create powerful relationships without coming across weird.

Having spoken to lots of agents over the last 12 months, I have listened, and realised that so many of us agents, want to learn from each other, want support, and want to excel and realise the value in learning of others.

Firstly, I owe all my ideas, passion and desire to the industry. And I want to say thank you to fellow agents, ARMA, LKP, IRPM and the many endless people from service providers, contractors, our clients and the leaseholders that have helped me create and fuel my ideas.

My names Desmond Moreira and I run a block management company called Habitare, I have a podcast called ‘More with Moreira’ and some of you may of heard me talk at some industry events.

I am on a mission to collaborate with as many people as I can, as I believe this is a complete hack, to help agents excel, fast track there learning and deliver better services.

Collaborative learning can be traced back to ancient times, from Ancient India, Ancient Greece in the west to China in the East. Through the age’s prophets have taught in small groups of disciples to great effect.

Studies have shown in America that students obtain higher test scores, through collaborative learning classes, oppose to traditional set ups.

And as a business owner, I have experienced the value and currency of relationships, and learnt that you when you help others, they will intern want to help you. I have built up a network of agents who now I can access and leverage for support when I need them, and they too, can call upon me.

When I started in block management several years ago, I thought I could do it better, I believed I was better, and the industry had it wrong. Then I learnt, that I was wrong.

But in all my learning in last 8 years, the last 12 months have proved more inspiring than any other time. As I have met, and helped dozens of fellow agents, with problems they have faced, shared ideas, and explored opportunities.

That was the inspiration behind ‘The Block Managers Boardroom’ (BMB)

It’s a space where block management professionals can learn of their peers, create valuable relationships, get feedback on ideas and accelerate their education.

No suppliers, no sponsors, just BLOCK MANAGEMENT professionals trying to up their game.

We ran our first event in Essex ‘Chelmsford’ on 24th September and will be running our next event in Southampton on 08th November with plans to run a BMB in Manchester and London also. The idea is they run every quarter in each location with different agents getting involved.

Natalie Rubinstein – Marler & Marler

“The Block Managers Boardroom was such a great event and I’d definitely recommend any property manager looking to learn, grow and collaborate with likeminded individuals to attend. The mix of those who attended was perfect ranging from those who have recently started their own company, to those from both large and small  companies. From this event I’ve made great connections who I look forward to collaborating with further, and I look forward to attending future events.”

Abby Brealey – Metta Property Management

“I feel strongly about positively influencing the leasehold industry and believe collectively we can achieve more. The intention of bringing a group of people together with a common goal to support each other is something I’m pleased to be part of.”

    Nick Rick – Warwick Estates

“The block managers boardroom hosted by Desmond Moreira was a great event. It was refreshing to meet others in the industry who were willing to share their problems and help their industry peers. I hope this is the start of something great, which connects the industry together and allows us to collaborate not only to improve our businesses, but the service delivered to our customers as well.”

You might be thinking it’s just another event, and I would say YES it is! But this is truly like no other event, as its sole intention, is for purpose of building relationships and having access to an engaged and willing community who value giving back, and supporting your growth.
